Chivas ladies bag Mexican soccer crown

Goalkeeper Blanca Félix was the heroine as the Guadalajara Chivas women’s team won the Liga Mx Femenil soccer crown, despite losing to Pachuca 0-1 in the second leg of the final played Monday evening in the Akron Stadium in Zapopan.

pg1dThe Chivas triumphed 4-3 on aggregate thanks to a dominant 4-2 victory earned in the first leg played in Pachuca three days earlier.

Just over 40,000 fans (almost full capacity) held their breath when Pachuca, leading 1-0, were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute.

Charlyn Corral’s penalty was well struck, but Félix was equal to the shot, throwing herself to her left to make a fine save, before being mobbed by her teammates.

Chivas were able to see out the last 20 minutes to win their second Liga Mx title in the five years the league has been in existence.

After lifting the trophy in the stadium, the women went on an open-top bus ride to the Minerva Glorieta, where hundreds of fans had gathered to welcome the team.
