Jake Paul, the 27-year-old media-driven boxer/influencer who will take on 58-year-old Mike Tyson in a highly publicized live-streamed (Netflix) showdown on November 15, believes he is good enough to challenge the world’s best fighter: Guadalajara’s own Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Ahead of his fight with Tyson, which one U.K. newspaper described as “a freak show, a meaningless event, a danger to Tyson’s health, and a threat to the dignity of boxing,” Paul stated, “My fight against Canelo at 200 pounds for the cruiserweight championship of the world would be the most important fight ever, even bigger than my fight against Tyson. It makes a lot of sense.”
Canelo, 31, has not responded to the challenge. While he may be nearing the end of his career, most boxing analysts agree that he possesses far too much skill for Paul to pose any threat. With only 11 professional fights, Paul has yet to face a truly elite opponent, and without a legitimate match against a top-tier boxer, his career in the sport remains difficult to take seriously.
