Robles will soon be heading for the Vatican to participate in the conclave to elect a new pontiff, following the announcement that Pope Benedict XVI is leaving the papacy on February 28. Benedict was not a popular choice in Mexico when elected in April 2005 but won the hearts of Catholics here during a visit to this country last year. Benedict named Robles Ortega a cardinal in November 2007.
