Tlajomulco the big loser as new light train line is awarded to Zapopan-Tlaquepaque

The Transport and Communications Ministry (SCT) announced last week that Guadalajara’s next subway line will run diagonally across the city from Zapopan to Tlaquepaque.

SCT regional director Bernardo Gutierrez said the Jalisco government never submitted detailed proposals that justified a new line running from the Isla Raza station on the existing Line One to Santa Fe in Tlajomulco.

After investing a large sum on subpar studies, Gonzalez continued to promote the line to Tlajomulco during the latter past of his administration, while knowing the SCT considered it inviable.

This week, state officials explained that daily passenger demand on the proposed line to Tlajomulco would scarcely exceed more than 35,000, compared to around the 200,000 estimated on the Zapopan-Tlaquepaque line that passes through the downtown core.

Tlajomulco Transport  Secretary Mauricio Gudiño said the decision to marginalize his municipality – governed  by the opposition Citizens Movement – was “political.”   The ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) is in power in Zapopan and Tlaquepaque.
