Bedridden ‘most obese’ man gets new lease on life

The world’s heaviest man, who at one time weighed in at 435 kilograms (959 pounds), underwent bariatric surgery at a Guadalajara clinic this week.

Andres Moreno, 37, was airlifted from his home in Ciudad Obregon to Guadalajara on Monday.

The 90-minute operation was carried out by surgeons from Gastric Bypass Mexico at the Arboledas Hospital in Colonia Arboledas.

The operation removed three-quarters of Moreno’s stomach and part of the duodenum, the first section of the small intestine.

According to chief surgeon  Jose Castaneda, Moreno will eat considerably less with his smaller, tubular-shaped stomach. He expects him to loose around 225 kilos over the course of the coming year.

Because of his obesity, Moreno has been confined to his bed and required a seven-man team and specially reinforced hospital stretchers to transport him to Guadalajara.

Moreno said the operation was like an “early Christmas present.”

He added that once his weight has returned to normal he wants to “go to a clothes store and wear a regular sized pair of pants and have a walk with the girlfriend I intend to find.”

According to their website, Gastric Bypass Mexico is run by Dr. Jose A. Castaneda, a leading certified bariatric surgeon with expertise in gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and duodenal switch.  The website says Castaneda “works alongside some of the most experienced weight loss surgeons in the country” and that the business has “an excellent track record of successful bariatric surgeries performed on thousands of international patients at very competitive prices.”
