Federal police officers arrested three Syrian nationals early Thursday at the Guadalajara International Airport after it was discovered they were traveling on false U.S. passports.
The three men had arrived on a Viva Aerobus flight from Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas. They had previously filled in Mexican tourist forms and presented the phony U.S. passports to immigration officers. Police officers and immigration officials detained the three Syrians as they waited to collect their bags from the luggage belts.
According to a press release, the three men had said they were heading to Bakersfield, California.
The Syrians will be held in an Mexican Immigration detention center until their legal status is clarified.
