If you have seen these booths popping up beside major Guadalajara avenues you may be wondering what their purpose is.
Known as “Módulos de Gestión Vial” and staffed by traffic agents referred to as “Ocelotes” (ocelots), they are part of a “road safety” initiative designed to assist motorists who find themselves in difficult situations, and help ease traffic flow when necessary.
The booths have so far been installed at five locations along Avenida López Mateos. The state Traffic Department (Setrans) reported that between November 1 to 3, agents at the booths provided support in 14 incidents of mechanical failures and flat tires, and made seven interventions to speed up traffic flow after vehicles were involved in accidents. The initiative also promotes a telephone number, 800-999-1980, which motorists can call if they break down on a main thoroughfare, in order to receive assistance.
