The operators of Guadalajara International Airport have decided to expand the official taxi fleet that services the increasingly busy travel hub.
Passenger complaints have been growing, with travelers consistently reporting long wait times to get a taxi to their destinations. On average, waits can range from 30 minutes to as long as an hour, especially during peak times.
To address the issue, Grupo Aeroportuario Del Pacífico (GAP) has called on transportation businesses to participate in a bid to add a third taxi operator and increase the number of taxis authorized to pick up passengers from outside the airport’s sole terminal.
Currently, 600 official taxis are operated by two concessionaires: Autotransportaciones Aeropuerto (Atasa) and Auto Transporte Terrestre de Aeropuerto (ATTA). GAP acknowledges that this number is no longer sufficient, given the regular long lines at peak hours. The airport handles approximately 50,000 passengers daily, totaling 17.8 million annually.
Platform-based rideshare services like Uber are not allowed to pick up passengers from the terminal. Airport security staff are vigilant in ensuring compliance, although passengers can order these rides nearby. However, they must walk to a gas station roughly 600 meters from the terminal to catch their ride.
GAP expects the third taxi operator to be in place by July.
