Jalisco’s traditions to shine in Times Square

Governor Pablo Lemus recently saw off the “Mexico in the Heart” tour, a project showcasing Jalisco’s traditions across 23 U.S. cities.

The initiative aims to connect with over five million U.S. residents of Jalisco heritage through mariachi music and folk dance. A highlight of the tour will be a performance in New York City’s Times Square on September 16, Mexican Independence Day, for the third consecutive year.

Coordinated by Sergio Suárez, a Jalisco native based in Chicago and president of the North American Institute for Mexican Advancement (NAIMA), the tour emphasizes strengthening Mexican identity abroad. “Our identity, our culture, continues to grow stronger thanks to projects like this,” Suárez noted.

This year’s tour will feature the Guadalajara Folkloric Ballet, a mariachi band, and a local color guard.

Nearly 70 artists and accompanying staff will participate in the U.S. tour.
