Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus announced during his annual state report on November 6 that the Chapala highway makeover, which has been causing significant traffic congestion between Guadalajara’s airport and the Periférico (city ring road), will be completed in 15 days.
Bearing in mind that completion deadlines offered by government officials should often be taken with a large pinch of salt, this news will be a welcome relief for motorists and regular commuters traveling on one of Jalisco’s busiest stretches of highway, especially those driving to and from Guadalajara and the lakeside area.
Over the past month, travel times between the airport and the city perimeter have averaged around 90 minutes, with some taxi drivers reporting delays of over two hours for the 19-kilometer journey to the Periférico junction. As a result, many travelers have opted for the longer route via Periférico Oriente and the outskirts of Tonala, which begins at the airport, returning to the city via the Mexico City autopista and paying the 26-peso toll.
