Trump 2.0 Day One: What Mexico should expect him to do

Reports suggest that Donald Trump plans to sign as many as 100 executive orders before heading to the inaugural balls on November 20. By comparison, Joe Biden issued 17 such orders on his first day in 2021, which was a record at the time.

In November last year, Trump announced he would impose a 25 percent tariff on all Mexican and Canadian imports on his first day back in office if the flow of migrants and drugs was not curtailed. Since then, he has been less vocal about this threat, leading many to believe it was primarily a negotiating tactic rather than a concrete plan—at least for now.

However, if Trump follows through, Mexico and Canada are likely to retaliate with tariffs of their own, potentially triggering a trade war that could impact the finances of citizens on both sides of the border.

Trump has also vowed to seal the U.S.-Mexico border and initiate what he describes as the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. The full details on exactly how this will be implemented remain unclear.

One measure that appears more certain is his intent to designate Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations. This designation would allow the U.S. government to take more aggressive actions against these groups, potentially including military intervention, freezing assets, and directly targeting their leaders.

Other executive orders Trump may issue with implications for Mexican citizens include restarting construction of the border wall and ending birthright citizenship for children born in the United States to non-citizens.
