Mayor pitches in to remove lake weeds

As Lake Chapala continues on a steady rise, Chapala Mayor Joaquín Huerta went into the muck last Sunday to lead a team of 50 volunteers in a clean-up of aquatic weeds that are creeping up on the town’s waterfront.

The National Water Commission (Conagua) reports that the lake reached 52.75 percent of its holding capacity as of August 4, with a 75-centimeter gain in elevation since June 15.

On the same date last year Chapala had recovered only 51 centimeters.

As excess water is now being released from the principal dams located along the Lerma River, the recuperation of Mexico’s largest lake is expected to keep up during the remaining two months of the 2015 rainy season.
