Pet Food Bank Lakeside faces hard times

Pet Food Bank Lakeside is struggling to make ends meet and could use a boost in community support to forge ahead in efforts to guarantee that local families and their pets can remain united despite the troubles caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

pg13bThe all-volunteer program to provide pet food to underprivileged families has been forced to temporarily suspend the supply chain for around 200 cats and dogs this month due to dwindling finances.

The project was launched one year ago by Julie Wittman after she moved to lakeside from Oregon last March, just as the pandemic struck.

¨It soon became very apparent that the community that I had been dreaming of as my new home was in crisis,¨ she recalls. ¨Hardest hit were small local businesses and independent workers that had lost their jobs. They were soon struggling to feed their families. It was truly heartbreaking to see a family with no option but to turn their beloved pets on to the streets to fend for themselves.¨
