Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos has been selected to host the 62nd World Congress of Dance Research (WCDR), scheduled for May 21–25.
Organized by the International Dance Council (CID) and sponsored by UNESCO, the event will bring together dance specialists and performers from 20 countries for an intensive program featuring research presentations, lecture-demonstrations, classes, and public performances.
Francisco Iñiguez, the municipality’s communications coordinator, announced the congress at a press conference held February 10 in Chapala. He highlighted that Ixtlahuacán is the first Mexican city to be chosen as a venue for this prestigious international gathering.
The WCDR is convened twice a year—one session always taking place in Greece, currently scheduled for July 2025, and the other hosted in a different country. The congress covers all dance genres and caters to the interests of both dance companies and solo performers.
Workshop enrollment fees will be offered on a sliding scale for groups and student participants.
The congress in Ixtlahuacán will provide opportunities for ballet folklórico troupes and other regional dance groups to participate in training sessions and earn CID certification.
Most internal sessions, both in-person and virtual, will be held at the historic Teatro de Atequiza. Meanwhile, free public performances will take place each evening at 6 p.m. in Ixtlahuacán’s central plaza.
Organizers have confirmed the participation of renowned dancers from Russia and Italy.
