Lakeside quake evacuation drill slated for September 19

Earthquake evacuation exercises will be practiced in lakeshore communities and elsewhere throughout Mexico at noon on Friday, September 19.

In the state of Jalisco, the second Macrosimulacro Nacional of 2025 will be based on the hypothesis of an 8.1-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter located off the coast of La Huerta.

simulacroThe exercise seeks to strengthen the culture of safety precautions through active participation taking place in government offices, businesses, schools, and even private homes.

These drills were created in response to the devastating 1985 earthquake in Mexico City (see story above).

In April of this year, more than two million Jalisco residents participated in the first macro drill, methodically stepping out to designated outdoor safe spots while evacuating more than 10,000 buildings.

Sergio Ramírez López, director of the State Civil Protection and Fire Department, invites people to register buildings where the Macrosimulacro will be practiced at uepcbj.com/macrosimulacro, to measure the scope of the September exercise.

Basic recommendations for responding to both real and simulated earthquake incidents are to stay calm, follow established evacuation routes, avoid using elevators, keep a distance from windows and objects that may fall and cause injury, and wait in safe areas for instructions from civil protection personnel or other authorities.
