Covid-19 fatalities rising

Just like many of their counterparts in the United States, Mexican officials at all levels of government are urging citizens to get vaccinated quickly, as Covid-19 cases and deaths rise, especially among a younger sector of the population.

pg1bIn the first week of August, health authorities in Jalisco registered 281 fatalities where Covid was mentioned on a death certificate – the highest figure in the last 24 weeks.

On Tuesday, August 10, 79 deaths were reported, the highest single-day figure in the state since February 16. The official number of Covid fatalities in Jalisco now sits at 13,372.

The current data has meant that Jalisco has been moved back into the “maximum risk” red category in the federal epidemiological traffic light system. The Mexican Health Ministry determines each state’s “color” (green, yellow, orange or red) based on the rate of change in Covid case loads and hospital bed availability.  Many hospitals in Jalisco are reporting a shortage of ICU beds and ventilators.
