Few Omicron cases reported in Mexico

As the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant spreads rapidly worldwide, Mexico has confirmed just 23 cases.

Deputy Health Minister Hugo López-Gatell said Tuesday that the cases were identified in Tamaulipas (1), the State of Mexico (6) and Mexico City (16). None of the 14 men and nine women have been hospitalized and all have mild symptoms, he said, adding that just over two-thirds of those infected with the new variant are unvaccinated.

López-Gatell said Mexico experienced a third wave of infections from the Delta variant that reached its peak between July and August. Since then there has been a constant downward trend. This week’s national figures show a 19-percent decrease in confirmed cases compared to the previous week, he noted.
