Various advocacy organizations have joined forces to launch a campaign to highlight the ominous presence in Mexico of OXXO convenience stores, whose proliferation, they argue, represents a major danger to the population’s health.
El Poder del Consumidor, a consumer rights NGO, says that 88 percent of the products offered at the 23,000 OXXO stores peppered all across Mexico are unhealthy, and contribute to the country’s high rates of chronic-degenerative diseases.
Each store carries an average of 671 processed and ultra-processed products, according to a recent investigation titled “Radiografía OXXO: Productos que enferman tu vida” (OXXO X-ray: Products that make your life sick) carried out by the NGO and other groups.
