Will new train line finally make capital’s Felipe Ángeles Airport fly?

At last! Three years after its opening, Mexico City’s second airport has an essential direct rail connection to the capital’s central zone.

The federal government is hoping the new link will persuade more airlines to shift flights to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) — the shiny new facility located northeast of the capital in Zumpango, State of Mexico — from the centrally located but saturated Mexico City International Airport (AICM).

On March 26, President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the “Tren Felipe Ángeles,” a 41-kilometer suburban rail line linking AIFA with the downtown Buenavista station.

The journey will take 43 minutes once all ten trains are operational. Currently, only four trains are in circulation, meaning passengers can expect a 60-minute trip to the Buenavista station, which connects to the capital’s Metro Line B and Metrobús Line 1.

Train frequency is presently every 30 minutes, though authorities aim to reduce wait times to 12 minutes as additional units enter service.
