Hay literature festival cancels Veracruz event

The Hay Festival of literature and arts has cancelled its event in Veracruz in protest against the failure to protect freedom of expression in the state. Organizers of the event said that 800 writers around the world had contacted them asking for the cancellation, following a spate of attacks on journalists. In January, Moises Sanchez became the 15th journalist to be killed or disappeared in Veracruz since 2010.

Aeromexico expands to Boston, Toronto

Aeromexico will launch direct flights from Mexico City to Toronto and Boston, as of May and June respectively, the airline’s director general Andres Conesa revealed in the February edition of its in-flight magazine Aire.

Mexican Flag Day, February 24

Homages to the Mexican flag will be paid across the length and breadth of the nation on Tuesday, February 24 – Dia de la Bandera. Ceremonies in the Plaza de la LIberacion in  downtown Guadalajara start at 8 a.m., featuring students selected by their schools for their high academic grades.

Notorious drug ‘queenpin’ walks free

Jalisco authorities have released another high-profile criminal on a legal technicality. Sandra Avila Beltran, better known as the “Queen of the Pacific,” has been set free after a judge ruled that she had already served time for the five-year sentence that was keeping her behind bars.
