SEP: School cuotas are voluntary

Jalisco Education Department (SEP) officials have stressed that they will sanction school directors who deny students access to classes because they have failed to pay a voluntary “cuota” (fee).

By law, public eduction in Jalisco is free to all.

However, schools traditionally ask parents or guardians for a “voluntary donation” – that can range from anywhere form 250 to 800 pesos – to help with some of the annual expenses.

SEP accepts the practice but says parents have the right not to make a contribution.

In other news, the SEP has announced that the upcoming school year will run from August 19, 2013 through July 15, 2014.
