Opposition Senators demand elections in Michoacan

With Michoacan’s governor still absent through illness, opposition parties demanded a new gubernatorial election this week.

Federal Senators of the National Action Party (PAN) and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) said the local Congress must call a new election because interim Governor Jesus Reyna lacks the authority to deal with the state’s problems with organized crime.

Governor Fausto Vallejo of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) took a leave of absence for 90 days in order to undergo a liver transplant in the United States in June.

However, his period of leave expired on July 23, leaving the unelected Reyna still in charge of the state, which has been hit heavily by drug related violence in recent weeks.
