Penalties go up for drunk drivers

Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies has approved toughened penalties for DUI offenders on federal highways, as well as for several other offenses.

The maximum penalty for anyone involved in an accident while under the influence of alcohol has been raised to three years in prison, and a fine equivalent to 300 days’ minimum salary (around 21,000 pesos).  Similar penalties will apply to those who are under the influence of drugs, or who are texting or talking on their cellphones while involved in accidents.
