Tlaquepaque gay couple becomes first to legally adopt child in Jalisco

When Valeria and Patricia legally registered their infant daughter Mia Isabella, Wednesday, January 3, 2018, they became the first gay couple to do so in the state of Jalisco.

The same judge who married the two women, Fabian Guzman, also presided over the registering process, which involved, among other things, altering Mia Isabella’s birth certificate to reflect her “non-traditional” parentage.

A Supreme Court decision in 2016 made gay marriage effectively legal in Jalisco (although the state constitution has never been changed to reflect this decision).  However, no such ruling has technically lowered legal obstacles for adoption of children by gay parents.

Regardless of whether they will face challenges to Mia Isabella’s adoption down the road, the jubilant couple seem optimistic and expressed solidarity with the LGBTQ community in a joint statement.

“Don’t be fearful.  We will keep fighting for our rights.   We can accomplish anything with a little patience and perseverance.”
