19-year-old Tapatio climber makes history

“Absolutely nothing is impossible when you believe in yourself,” declared Juan Diego Martínez Álvarez of Guadalajara, after becoming the youngest Mexican in history to climb to the summit of Mount Everest.

pg7bThe amazing part of this 19-year-old Tapatio’s story is that just 27 hours after reaching the top of the highest mountain in the world, Martinez climbed to the peak of Lhotse in China, at 8,516 meters the fourth tallest mountain in the world.

“Doing those two mountains in such a short time [meant] I broke another world record: the youngest ever to complete a double header of the higher eight thousanders, Everest-Lhotse,” Martínez posted on his Instagram account.

His feats don’t end there. Martínez went to the Everest base camp and ascended the mountain almost immediately, without any acclimatization—something few climbers ever consider.

Not only that, Martínez carried a 20-kilogram keyboard with him to the summit of Everest, where he played a piece of music, thus setting another world record.

What’s next for this incredible young man?
