Finding the missing: the gulf between families & authorities is wider than ever

Predictably, International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, Tuesday, August 31, was marked in contrasting ways by families of missing persons in Jalisco and the government that runs this state.

pg6aFamilies holding vigils for their relatives targeted the failings of the Special Prosecutor for Disappeared Persons (FEPD), an agency many accuse of negligence in conducting professional investigations.

Meanwhile, the state government touted the positive results obtained by the FEPD, commending the 24/7 work of its specialist personnel, not only in the location of missing persons, but in persecuting those responsible for abductions.

Although Governor Enrique Alfaro calls investigation of the 15,000-plus cases of missing persons registered in Jalisco the “highest priority on the state agenda,” criticism of his administration’s efforts to tackle the problem have been incessant and is only likely to grow as his six-year term reaches a conclusion.
