A mass escape attempt at the Cieneguillas prison in Zacatecas unleashed a wave of violence in Jalisco’s neighboring state last Sunday.
Cars and trucks were set on fire, supposedly to distract authorities and enable the escaped inmates to evade their pursuers.
State authorities said the National Guard was mobilized and sent into the prison to successfully foil the escape attempt, adding that an unspecified number of inmates and officers were injured in the confrontation.
This latest incident comes on the heels of two other high-profile incidents in the state: A Zacatecas judge was shot to death on December 4, and late last month the head of the National Guard in the state was killed in a gun battle with armed men during an operation against organized crime.
