Kids banned from street soccer... whatever next?

Changes to the wording of a Zapopan municipal governance regarding playing soccer in the street has provoked a fierce response, especially from professional players whose skills were nurtured by informal kick-abouts en la calle.

Known colloquially as “cascaritas,” street soccer is a longstanding pursuit played in working-class neighborhoods, and welcomed by most parents as a way of keeping their children active and out of trouble.

But the growth of traffic and noise in the metropolis has frayed the patience of many neighbors, leading to an increase in the number of complaints of intrusive behavior.

Councilors say the changes to the ordinance simply clarify existing offenses but do not outlaw playing games in the street.
