Woman dies at metro area railway crossing

A woman driver died this week after her vehicle was dragged more than 250 meters by a train at a notoriously dangerous crossing in the metro-area suburb of Tlajomulco.

pg7aAccording to Jalisco Civil Protection officers, the driver of a blue Chevrolet Aveo tried to outrun an approaching freighter train but may have stalled on the tracks at the crossing. At this point of its trajectory, the railway line from Guadalajara’s main train station to Manzanillo intersects a three-road junction, near the Tlajomulco Chedraui supermarket, located beside the Colinas del Roble subdivision.

Accidents, some of them fatal, have occurred frequently at this site due to the lack of road signage and other infrastructure, according to Spanish-language newspaper reports.

The driver was approximately 30 years of age and died at the scene of the accident, authorities said.

The city’s Tren Ligero (subway) Line Four will run alongside the train line from the south of Tlaquepaque, through some of the city’s newer suburbs to the center of Tlajomulco.  Work on the line started last year and is slated to finish by the end of 2024.  As a result of this work, one might expect this dangerous train crossing to be modernized and made safer.
