New museum celebrates Jalisco’s tequila heritage

Do you have a passion for tequila? Then Guadalajara’s new Tequila Lab Museum is the perfect destination for you.

pg1cThis week marked the grand opening of this innovative space, which boasts an impressive collection of 2,900 tequila brands. Financed by the Tequila Regulatory Council and the Jalisco government, the museum offers visitors an immersive experience, complete with multimedia projections that trace the history and evolution of Mexico’s iconic spirit.

During the inauguration, Tequila Regulatory Council Director Ramón González highlighted the industry’s remarkable growth since the council’s founding in 1994. “Back then, there were barely 300 brands,” he said. “The sector produced 80 million liters a year; today, we are at 651 million liters.”

The 4,500-square-meter museum features exhibition rooms, a library, an auditorium, and a tasting room. Visitors can also delve into the story of tequila’s denomination of origin, first awarded to Jalisco in 1974, underscoring the drink’s cultural and geographic significance.

Of the 222 million pesos (approximately US$11 million) invested in the museum, the majority came from the private sector, González noted.

Tequila Lab is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, with an entrance fee of 180 pesos. It is located at Avenida Central Guillermo González Camarena 750, in Zapopan’s Residencial Poniente neighborhood, adjacent to the Jalisco Paseo Interactivo Museum (formerly the Trompo Mágico).
