La Maria Crater Lake update: Noisy revelry instead of spooky silence but looming volcano remains the same

Last weekend I had an opportunity to spend Saturday night at La Maria Lagoon in Colima, located 100 kilometers southwest of Lake Chapala.

pg8aThe placid waters of La María are surrounded by high crater walls, the perfect setting for a peaceful night in a tent, under a star-studded sky.

That’s what La María was like when I last visited it, just a few years ago. Today the atmosphere has changed somewhat. We paid the entrance fee, drove in, and half a minute later found ourselves in the middle of noisy revelers and inundated with loud music. Instead of a starry sky over a placid lake, we saw three new buildings that weren’t there before, increasing the number of rooms available at La María tenfold. As every one of those rooms had been booked, there were people everywhere, barbecuing, dancing and thoroughly enjoying the loud music. While I was taken aback, my friends were not: “It’s pretty much like any other Saturday night scene in Mexico,” they said.
