The rise of Netflix has been a boon to documentary filmmakers in Mexico, providing them with a tremendous platform to reach new audiences at home and around the world.
Although a good number of the early pieces focused on the darker side of life in this country – drugs, violence, political corruption, etcetera – more recent offerings are opening up this country’s extraordinary social and cultural kaleidoscope to a wider public.
One new half-hour documentary, “Lorena, la de Pies Ligeros,” follows María Lorena Ramírez Nahueachi, a 24-year-old ultra-long-distance runner of the Tarahumara indigenous people in northern Mexico, who has gained fame, not just for her stamina and accomplishments, but from the fact that she shuns normal racing gear, choosing to run in traditional native attire: a long colorful dress and sandals.
