Guadalajara-based team Los Charros de Jalisco will host the 60th Serie del Caribe de Beisbol 2018, an annual tourney that sees teams from Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and other countries in the region try to plant their flags at the summit of the Caribbean baseball mountain.
This honor’s bestowal, according to Omar Canizales, president of the Mexican Pacific Baseball League — to which Los Charros belongs — is due to the high attendance of the Clasico Mundial events that took place at the Zapopan-based stadium in March of this year. Jalisco posted the highest numbers of attendees and an impressive demonstration of organizational acumen.
“All the presidents [of the Serie del Caribe] voted unanimously in favor of Jalisco, especially because they showed themselves to have a very good organizational capacity; the Clasico Mundial was a good example of this,” said Canizales.
The Charros are also trying to bring a Major League Baseball (MLB) game to the Charro’s stadium. MLB Commissioner said earlier this month it was time to go beyond bringing exhibition games to Mexico and that the league should bring a real game to the country.
Baseball would seem to be gaining steam in Mexico, a country overwhelmingly dominated by soccer; a recent decision by the Mexican Baseball League will have baseball played year-round with two tourneys, like its more popular sportive cousin.
