Maria Sakkari of Greece was a popular winner of the WTA Guadalajara Akron Open last weekend, after defeating Caroline Dolehide of the United States, 7-5, 6-3.
Last year’s runner-up, Sakkari was overcome with emotion after winning her first WTA 1000 category title, and only the second WTA title of her career.
Even though Sakkari, 28, has climbed to the top of the world rankings, it has weighed heavily on her shoulders that she could only boast of one WTA title, the Moroccan Open in 2019. During her trophy drought since then, Sakkari has played in and lost six finals.
After her defeat in the first round of the U.S. Open earlier this month, she left the court in tears, apparently concerned about where her career was heading.
