Ajijic Jewish Film Festival opens Sunday with docu-musical on ‘Fiddler on the Roof’

The 14th Annual Ajijic Jewish Film Festival opens Sunday with Max Lewkowicz’s documentary “Fiddler: Miracle of Miracles,” which the New York Times called “a fascinating love letter to ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’”

This richly detailed documentary celebrates the beloved Broadway musical (and many of its iterations) first staged in 1964 with choreography and direction by Jerome Robbins and starring Zero Mostel as Teyve, the milkman.

Loaded with interviews from many of the creative teams and scholars who examine the themes of alienation, xenophobia and gender equality, to name a few, “Miracle of Miracles” offers up delicious nuggets explaining the various creatives’ visions and interpretations.

As an example, Jerome Robbins’s Tevya, (Zero Mostel) in 1964 differs intentionally from Norma Jewison’s vision of Tevya in 1971, played by an Israeli (Topol) because Jewison wanted to reflect how the then recent Israeli military victories influenced him to have Topol portray Tevya with more fire and anger than the resigned and compliant version Mostel offers.
