A well-known tequila company executive was shot to death in the parking lot of the Punto Sao Paulo shopping mall located in the Providencia neighborhood of Guadalajara.
Reports identified the victim as Carlos Enrique Newton Frausto, 50, the operational director of Tequilera Newton.
Several gunmen approached the white Suburban SUV driven by Newton as he exited the ramp from the underground parking lot with his wife in the passenger seat. The gunmen fired multiple shots at their target, while his wife was reportedly unharmed.
Green Cross paramedics arrived quickly but Newton had succumbed. His wife was not injured, reports said.
According to the police report, 21 9-mm caliber shell casings were found at the scene of the incident.
Several days after the incident, Jalisco Attorney General Luis Joaquín Méndez Ruiz told reporters that Newton had been named in various criminal complaints regarding alleged delitos patrimoniales, a general term for real estate and other kinds of fraud.
