Students and parents from Ajijic’s Escuela Saúl Rodiles Piña appear to have spurred state and local authorities into action after staging a protest during the September 16 Independence Day parade. Their hand-lettered signs carried messages such as “We demand the reconstruction of our school,” “The budget is approved. Why haven’t they started?” and “Without the school, there is no future.”
On September 22, members of the school’s parent-teacher association announced on Facebook that reconstruction of the deteriorating elementary school was finally underway.
“We are pleased to inform the entire community that it was worth it—that the cries of our children were heard, even though during the parade our own authorities tried to silence them, the same authorities who should have backed and supported us. The goal was achieved. Today, the construction company arrived to carry out the project for our new school,” the statement read.
