Air quality alerts soar in December

As December drew to a close, the state Environment Agency (Semadet) issued several new air quality alerts in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

The southern parts of the city, including Santa Fe, Miravalle and Las Pintas, were most affected by the higher particle levels in the air. Throughout last month, Semadet activated 13 “Phase One” alerts due to the higher pollution levels, primarily caused by vehicle emissions, industrial emissions and agricultural burning. At this time of the year, the contamination is exacerbated by bonfires and pyrotechnics, Semadet said.
