Silent art auction

Galeria Monica Cardenas in San Antonio Tlayacapan will hold a silent auction of photos and art from October 20 to November 4.

Bid on works by Jose Hernandez-Claire, Alejandra Zuñiga, Bethany Putnam, Daniel Acosta, Ursula Hernandez, Cristina Cardenas, Jaime Ruiz, Antonio Lopez Vega, Leonardo Hernandez, Monica Cardenas, Gonzalo Espinoza, Kika Sanchez, Xill Fessenden, Xilotl Xilonzochitl and Octavio Garcia Perez. Tango in Chapala

Sunday, October 23, 12:30 p.m. at Centro Cultural González Gallo, a sample of Argentine folklore and life is presented through dance. The renowned tango dancer “La Güera Ascencio” and guests will present a work that explores and shows different aspects of the culture of that beautiful South American country. Admission is free.

Art auction at LCS

More than 100 works of art and collectibles will go on the block Wednesday, October 26, at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) at a benefit auction for the organization’s Children’s Art Program.

The once-in-a-lifetime sales event will offer paintings, prints, reproductions, sculptures, pottery and ceramics, as well as masks from the private collection of the late Laurie Paul Wilson, a resident Ajijic artist who recently passed away.  She had specified in her will that she wanted the collection to be sold to generate funding to help sustain the weekly Saturday morning art workshops LCS sponsors for local kids.

The auction will have two components: a live auction with Efrén González wielding the gavel, and a silent auction in which buyers register written bids on items displayed on the Art Mural Patio.

All the auction items are pictured in full color catalogues compiled by Garry Musgrave that may be viewed online or downloaded in PDF files at lakechapalasociety.com/public/auction.php.

The program begins at 11 a.m. with the start of the silent auction. Bidding closes at 2:30 p.m.

For the live auction there will be an on site preview of selected works from the 51 lots taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the LCS garden Gazebo. González is scheduled to kick off bidding at 3:30 p.m.

A cash bar will be open from noon until the live auction concludes.

Payments by credit or debit card will be accepted.

Double jazz band concert

La Cochera Cultural presents the Jazz and Improvised Music Residency concert, Friday, October 28, 5 p.m. This double concert features the Chocolate Smoke Gang and lakeside jazz quartet Trialago. The Chocolate Smoke Gang comprises Carlos Maldonado on double bass, Remi Alvarez on tenor saxophone, Santiago Von on alto saxophone and Gabriel Puentes on drums. Trialago consists of Sofia Ramirez on piano, Miguel Soto on drums, Gilberto Rios on double bass and Eleazar “Chuco” Soto on tenor saxophone. a cash bar, special tacos and Helados Bok ice cream will be on sale.

ASA Fall Show

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) is hosting its Annual Fall Show at the Centro Cultural Ajijic. The theme is “Emergence” and features the work of ASA member artists. The opening reception is Friday, October 21, from 4 to 7 p.m.  ASA invites you to join them for thoughtful art, live music and refreshments. The show will remain available for viewing from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Thursday, October 27.

Art and crafts

Corazón Artesano has scheduled its next craft show and creativity festival for Saturday and Sunday, October 29 and 30, at Ajijic’s Jardín Casa Vieja, located along the service road to the east of Calle Rio Bravo between Yves restaurant and Blue Rose Bistro. @Xepacali Ropa Etnica Artesanal will be part of the festival. Opera at CCA

Sunday, October 30, 5 p.m., tenor Ezequiel Ojeda will sing opera pieces at the Centro Cultural Ajij

Special concert

Centro Educativo Jaltepec, Mexico’s only technical university in hotel and hospitality management, is holding a concert to benefit their students Wednesday, November 9, in the gran salon of their campus, located on the hillside in Jaltepec, in the municipality of Jocotepec.

A no-host bar will open at 4:30 p.m. and complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a glass of wine will be served.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra violinist Diego Rojas and pianist Timothy G.R. Welch will perform at 5:15 p.m.

Enjoy a cocktail after the concert while watching the sunset over Lake Chapala.

Feria Maestros

The Feria Maestros del Arte will offer a variety of music and dance on its stage from the moment it opens at 9:30 a.m.  until it closes at 5:30 p.m., Friday to Sunday, November 11 to 13 at the Club de Yates in Chapala. The 80-peso entrance fee is probably the least expensive entertainment option at Lakeside that weekend. On Friday enjoy performances by Mariachi Nuevo Chapala, the Paul Lopez Trio, a ballet folklorico troupe, the Willy Savala Trio and the dance of the Tastoanes of Tonala.

Saturday begins with the Ajijic Trio, Ray Domenech, Mariachi Feminil, the dance of the Tastoanes of Tonala, MexiLatin, Mariachi Feminil, and the Nugget Jazz Trio. Wrapping things up Sunday are the Redes y Canto de Chapala, a ballet folklorico troupe and the Ajijic Trio.

Auditions at Bare Stage

Bare Stage Theatre holds auditions for its December production of “Christmas at Pemberely,” by Lauren Gunderson, Wednesday, November 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Director Lynn Phelan is looking for five women and three men are needed. Show dates are December 29, 30 and 31.

For those interested but not yet in town, there will be auditions again in December. Dates will be advertised.

Bare Stage is a reader’s theater. Acting and good pronunciation is required but no memorization. Auditions will be held at Bare Stage Theatre, Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar.

If you cannot make it on November 16, the director will consider seeing you at a private time but you will need to make this request ahead of the auditions.
