Letter To The Editor - March 22, 2025

Dear Sir,

In reply to the letter (March 16) from Tom Thompson regarding CFE issues, I feel for him.

In our fraccionamiento we loose power four times-plus per month on a regular basis. That is why I have my own five-day back-up system.

However, about his complaint about his 220V requirement, he needs to know the Mexican power system is a 4-wire 120v/208v 3-phase system. There is not really 220V or 240V. If he has a 3-wire supply to his house, he gets 2 x 120V and one time 208v, under normal conditions. However, CFE tends to run higher voltages. We get 130V and close to 215V. If Tom wants good 220-240V he needs to have a transformer/voltage regulator from 120V to 240V. Amazon (United States) has a 2000w unit (Simran AR-2000 Regulator Power Converter Voltage Transformer, 2000 WATT) for about US$102 plus tax. The size (2000w) would run almost all of his 220V appliances but they also have smaller and bigger ones.

Note: a simple 120/240V transformer does not regulate voltage. Temu and Aliexpress also have different units.
