Mexican law enforcement

Dear Sir,

The Guadalajara Reporter’s courage in leading with the May 9 massacre story by Dale Hoyt Palfrey in the May 11-17 edition, and in the same edition, Allyn Hunt’s article on “Politics so disheartening ...” deserves the highest commendation from Lakesiders.

Thanks for farewell reception

Dear Sir,

I wish to thank all those that attended the farewell reception held at the Lake Chapala Society in my honor. I was touched by the kind words expressing all that I had done for this community.  However, it is this community that has given me so much. It has given me 22 years of wonderful friendships and lasting memories, which will help keep me warm during the cold winters in New Hampshire.

Many thanks to those that contributed delicious food to share.  Adios!

Mary Alice Sargent

Thanks to those who helped Power the Tower

Dear Sir,

This is a letter of heartfelt thanks to the many men and women who dug in and helped in every phase of the Power the Tower event.  From the people who sold tickets, to the men who set up the tents, tables and chairs – thank you!

St. Patrick’s Day has a deeper meaning

Dear Sir,

For most people St. Patrick’s Day is a day of parades, parties, leprechauns and green beer. But just as Christmas is about more than commercialized fun, so too does St. Patrick’s Day have a deeper meaning.

Thanks Ruben Garcia!

Dear Sir,

Yesterday my husband and I were getting out of a taxi that was taking us to a friend´s home in Guadalajara after an eye doctor appointment. The taxi driver was friendly, so I practiced my little knowledge of Spanish on our way. When we arrived, the taxi was difficult for me to get out of, so I laid my iPad on the seat and then forgot about it and left it there. As soon as we went into our friend´s home I realized what I had done and my friend called the doctor´s office to see if they knew what taxi company was used. I described the driver as I remembered him. One of the secretaries (Christie) went outside and up to where the taxis were parked. She explained what had happened and they all figured out who the taxi driver was and the dispatcher was called.

Thanks Sergio!

Dear Sir,

Recently we hired Sergio, who advertises frequently in The Reporter (as “Your Friend Sergio”), as a guide for our trip (eight of us) from Ajijic to Morelia and to the wintering place of the butterflies in Michoacan. He was excellent beyond words – as a driver, a guide, a historian, a travel agent, a concerned and knowledgeable person of great good cheer, perfect tact, and large resourcefulness. He is really good when confronted with the unexpected. When one of our party suffered a fall that looked as if it might be dangerous, Sergio stayed with her and her husband through the night in the emergency room, translating between the couple and various doctors and nurses, running errands as need arose, all the time with patience and friendliness. The next day he was of great help with a follow-up visit with a doctor and a visit to an optometrist while never neglecting his other charges, changing hotels for us, showing us the sights, recommending excellent places to eat. He was tireless, minutely attentive, and just plain fun to be with. He also knew when we might prefer our own company while always making himself easy to find. He was friendly and competent in dealing with people ranging from policeman to toll collectors.
