Once you enter the modest Jardin de Ninette’s restaurant entrance, you encounter one of the most recommended new sites in Ajijic. There’s a small interior dining room, clean, tidy unpretentious. But another outdoor atmosphere sprawls back 40 meters into a quiet reserve behind the main building.
Some dining events are a casual dinner out, or a night free from cooking.
Every night of the week, La Fonda de la Noche, nestled on an urban street corner behind a thick, distinctive hedge of trees trimmed into archways, serves up a selection of Durango-style dishes to patrons tucked away in about eight small dining rooms scattered throughout the three floors and terrace of what at first appears to be a tiny eatery.
“If you don’t like it, you don’t pay,” goes the Punta Verde slogan. Talk about confidence.

La Mesa’s interior is an intimate space, bright and schmoozy, with service on thick oak tables covered in old-fashioned parchment. There’s an unusual vase per person loaded with a half-dozen each of forks, knives and spoons, a curiosity, but a practical one, especially if, like me, you drop forks all the time.
