Light-train crash causes disruptions

Daniel Muñoz was one of the passengers who boarded the train just seconds before it crashed.

“What happened was that the train we crashed into was waiting for another to come out and he didn’t warn the driver of our train. As the train came into the station our driver didn’t realize the other train was stationary, and because of that he didn’t even brake.”

The injured passengers have all been discharged from hospital, but the crash caused significant damage and forced the closure of the train service from Atemajac station to Pereferico Sur for sixteen hours. Police vehicles were on hand to give lifts to passengers. Former director of the train system Francisco Padilla Mancilla called for a full investigation of the incident.

“I think they have to investigate seriously and responsibly, since the lives of so many passengers are at risk when things like this happen. Fortunately thank God, this time there were only minor injuries.”

According to the train company, Tren Electrico Urbano, this is the first time two trains have crashed since the service was opened 25 years ago.
