A series of whimsical sculptures featuring artist Rodrigo de la Sierra’s genial character “Timeteo” has been installed along the Paseo Alcalde pedestrian walkway in downtown Guadalajara.
The exhibit comprises 15 installations showing this chubby, mouth-less, ear-less and simpatico cartoon-like character in a variety of poses, such as sitting at a bench, climbing a ladder and flying a plane.
De la Sierra refers to Timo as “everyone’s man,” a kind of alter ego. Although comical on the surface, the pieces have a serious side to them. According to the artist, each work is a metaphor for an economic, political or social problem, although that may not be immediately obvious to the onlooker.
De la Sierra said the public exhibit is totally interactive and family oriented, and he encourages people to take photos of themselves alongside the works.
De la Sierra lives in Mexico City and has a degree in architecture. He has exhibited his work in Italy, China, South Korea, the United States, Mexico and other countries.
In 2018, as a tribute to his professional career and social assistance work, the National Lottery featured Timoteo on its raffle tickets. That same year, the character appeared on a postage stamp commemorating World Mail Day.
In 2021, Forbes magazine named De la Sierra among the top ten in its list of 100 Most Creative Mexicans.
