Problems of garbage collection continue to plague the municipality of Guadalajara. With more than 1,850 tons generated each day, the private concessionary, Caabsa Eagle, is hard pushed to meet deadlines, and mounds of uncollected trash frequently pile up the streets of the metro-area municipality.
Mayor Pablo Lemus says the situation has improved since May, when additional trucks were added to the collection fleet.
However, evidence on the ground often disproves that claim. Opposition councilors have demanded the municipal government come up with a better structured plan to make collections more efficient and avoid potential heath hazards. An argument that is gathering steam is that city hall takes over full responsibility for all trash collection when the concession runs out in 2024, similar to how neighboring Zapopan is now managing its service.
