President moves to scrap summer time

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said it is “very likely” that Daylight Saving Time (DST) in Mexico will be eliminated because it is “unpopular” and “harmful to health.”

Although he had previously said a proposal would be put to public consultation, AMLO is now saying his government will pursue a legislative course to scrap the annual time change.  AMLO has called the energy and financial savings from DST “minimal,” and dismissed some arguments that the move would have other economic consequences, such as depreciation of the peso or a reduction in foreign investment. He noted that the U.S. Congress is also discussing the value of DST. DST is adopted everywhere in Mexico, except in the states of Quintana Roo and Sonora.
