Guachimontones closed for Equinox

Thousands of people flocked to Mexico’s iconic archaeological sites like Teotihuacán and Chichén Itzá to witness the Spring Equinox on Thursday, March 20, many of them dressed in white to receive the renewing energy of the sun.

Several sites in Jalisco also traditionally attract hundreds of spiritual seekers looking to reconnect with nature and ancestral traditions. However, the most popular site, Guachimontones, the pristine archaeological site 45 kilometers west of Guadalajara in the municipality of Teuchitlán, closed its doors on March 20 due to the recent discovery of a gruesome clandestine graveyard used by a criminal organization just seven kilometers away.

Guachimontones, famous for its unique circular pyramids dating back to the Pre-Classic and Classic periods of Mesoamerican civilization (around 200 BCE to 900 CE), is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The site also features a fascinating museum and is large enough to accommodate the crowds that visit during the Spring Equinox. But given the national outpouring of concern and distress over the recent discovery, the site’s administrators decided it was best to cancel this week’s gathering.
