Jalisco demands artists pledge against crime

Artists performing in entertainment venues in Jalisco are now required to sign a letter of intent, pledging not to condone criminal activity during their performances.

pg1dThis move follows the controversy surrounding the group Los Alegres del Barranco, who projected images of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (“El Mencho”), the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, during a concert at the Auditorio Telmex in late March.

Bands and promoters who violate this commitment will face sanctions and possible prosecution.

The measure, introduced by Governor Pablo Lemus and published on April 1 in the official state gazette, El Estado de Jalisco—equivalent to an executive order—also prohibits bands with a history of endorsing crime from performing at state-sponsored events or venues.

The first performer to sign Lemus’ directive was Alfredito Olivas, a rising 31-year-old norteño and banda singer from Chihuahua, who has upcoming shows scheduled in Zapopan and Tepatitlán.

In the wake of the scandal at the Auditorio Telmex on March 29, Zapopan Mayor Juan José Frangie announced that municipal inspectors would be monitoring various venues—including restaurants, bars, nightclubs, dance halls, and even private events—for potential instances of artists promoting criminal activity.
