Two security professionals with ties to US killed in Tlaquepaque

Two Mexican security specialists collaborating with the U.S. State Department were killed in an ambush at a taco stand in the Residencial La Soledad neighborhood of Tlaquepaque on the evening of Friday, May 16.

The victims were identified as César Gustavo Guzmán González, a former Guadalajara police officer and member of both the Jalisco State Security Secretariat and Interpol. He also served as president of the Jalisco chapter of ASIS (American Society for Industrial Security). The second victim, Carlos Amador Chavela, was the former director of scientific research at the Public Defender’s Institute in the state of Hidalgo and an expert in financial crimes who ran his own consulting firm.

According to multiple news reports, both men had been working with the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau (INL) at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. The INL, a division of the U.S. State Department, focuses on combating drug trafficking and international criminal activity that threatens U.S. and global security.

Four others were injured in the ambush, including at least one person also reportedly involved in the security and surety field.

In a social media post, the ASIS Jalisco chapter mourned the loss of its former president and praised his significant contributions to the training of Mexican security forces. The U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara also condemned the attack and extended its condolences, clarifying that the victims were neither diplomatic personnel nor employees of the U.S. mission in Mexico.
