U.S. citizens voting in this presidential election must do so this week if their absentee ballots, including “emergency” FWABs (Federal Write-in Absentee Ballots) are to reach voting districts by the deadline, say Lake Chapala area activists.
“Next Thursday October 27, we are dropping off ballots to be mailed at the U.S. Consulate,” said Tim Whiting, Get Out the Vote representative for Democrats Abroad.
“People who don’t wish to go through the rather tedious process on their own can come to our sessions at Lake Chapala Society, Monday, October 24, and Wednesday October 26, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. They can bring ballots they already requested and printed or we have FWABs too. We’re all set up to help,” he emphasized.
“This is a hotly contested election,” said Democrats Abroad volunteer Larry Pihl. “We’re probably going to have 1 1/2 times the amount of ballots we’ve had in previous elections and that number includes a lot of dual citizens.
“Everybody is very interested, even the Canadians I’ve talked to. The whole world is afraid.” He added that he assists voters of any party. Some people who already absentee voted via the Democrats Abroad process have received e-mails from their home districts saying their ballot was received, checked and would be counted in the November 8 election.
